Art will brighten Cleveland's bike station

Public art that taps nostalgia and a retro ‘80s palette will liven up the downtown Cleveland bike station. Last Friday, the Cleveland Planning Commission approved Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Mark Reigelman and undergrad Scott Stibich’s idea to adhere hundreds of metallic-blue bike handlebars festooned with green streamers on a blue-painted façade of a city owned garage at E. 2nd Street, just north of The Q. The pair won the design competition hosted by Cleveland Public Art – supported by a grant from local giving circle, Cleveland Colectivo – from 30 eligible submissions.

The station, dubbed The Bike Rack, is on track for a spring 2010 groundbreaking, Cleveland City Planner, Marty Cader, reported, and a summer grand opening. The city is funding the build out of the 6,500 sq. ft. space, which will include indoor rack space for 50 bikes, men’s and women’s shower and locker rooms and a repair shop. Downtown Cleveland Alliance (DCA) will manage the operation and plans to hire a manager whose duties will include individual and corporate membership sales and services.
Companies such as Medical Mutual have expressed interest in buying memberships for employees, Cader said. DCA is considering operating a bike rental program from the station, he added, and has discussed with The Cleveland Indians a bike valet service. At least two other staffers could be hired to manage the front desk and to run the repair shop.
The artists will paint the horizontal decks of the five-story garage in deep blue and then use an industrial strength adhesive tape to affix more than 800 locally milled, recycled aluminum bike handles which will be painted a sky blue and accented with a bright green streamers made of nautical nylon rope. The colors were actually borrowed from the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Summit logo (not Miami Vice).
“When we put hundreds of these on the building, you’ll have a surface that’s in constant motion,” says Reigelman.
The art was inspired by childhood memories of riding a bike for the first time. In addition to improving the drab white façade, the artists developed sign materials. The commission approved the design of The Bike Rack and a ‘b’ inside a circle, which plays off of the universal parking symbol of a ‘P’ inside a circle.
“Is 50 racks enough space to meet demand?” Commission member David Bowen wondered afterwards. Cader responded that University Circle and Cleveland State University are also working on bike station plans, and he suggested that filling the downtown station could lead to more stations.
“Are these stations profitable?” Commission chair Tony Coyne asked. Cader said Cleveland is building on the business model of Chicago’s bike station at Millennium Park, which depends largely on its bike rental income (it also has corporate sponsors including McDonald’s), and Bikestation, a facility located at Union Station in Washington, D.C. reportedly generates income, and includes a bike valet service.

The Planning Commission acknowledged the ongoing conversations between its members and bike and pedestrian advocates to include a bike/ped path on the Innerbelt Bridge. At the end of the meeting, the commission discussed a resolution of support, and decided to explore how a resolution can impact the bridge design-build process. One option being discussed is adding an ‘add alt’ or an additional alternative that would allow the proposals to include non-motorized amenities on the bridge in the RFQ. Sustainable transportation advocates present provided feedback, including a stronger approach may be to include a requirement as part of the main RFQ. The commission will take up the matter again at its next meeting, on Jan. 22 in Room 217 in Cleveland City Hall.

SMALL GRANTS FOR BIG IDEAS: TWO YEAR OLD GIVING CIRCLE AWARDS MONEY TO SIX INNOVATIVE PROJECTS IN 2007

The Cleveland Colectivo, a two-year-old Cleveland-based “giving circle” whose members make collective contributions to innovative projects in Cleveland, has selected six projects for funding in 2007. Reflecting the group’s determination to transform Cleveland, these projects, selected from more than 150 applications, focus on creativity, social justice, economic development, environmental sustainability, youth and alternative media. In total, the Colectivo gave away $13,500 in 2007 (nearly twice as much as the group gave away in 2006).

“The Cleveland Colectivo is a part of a national trend – giving circles are growing across the country,” said Walter Wright, one of the group’s founding members. “We believe that philanthropy is something that anyone can participate in, and we want to celebrate the grassroots projects happening in Cleveland.”

The Colectivo provided grants to six different projects in 2007:

• Zygote Press, a print-making collaborative, was awarded $2,000 for the Artzreach Program. The funds will help purchase materials and pay teacher stipends for an initiative to provide arts programming to individuals in detention and re-entry programs, in the Broadway neighborhood of Cleveland. Find out more information about Zygote Press at www.zygotepress.com.

• ArtHouse, a community arts center in the Brooklyn Centre neighborhood, was awarded $2,000 for the Fresh Stop – Studio Stop program. A first time collaboration between ArtHouse and CityFresh, these groups will host a “Fresh Stop” farmers market two days per month in the ArtHouse parking lot at 3119 Denison Rd. The market will offer locally grown produce at affordable prices. During the farmers market, ArtHouse will offer a free, open-door studio at its facility, allowing the public to take advantage of arts programming and classes. Find out more information about ArtHouse at www.arthouseinc.org, and CityFresh at www.gotthenac.org.

• The Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center, a non-profit that focuses on fostering stronger relationships among youth and families of color, was awarded $5,000 for the African American and Latino Male Youth Dialogue program. The funds will be used for four quarterly dialogue sessions, estimated to impact 200 youth and fathers. The goal of the sessions is to create stronger intergenerational relationships, and to help youth change the projected outcomes of their lives. Contact the Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center at 216/651-8236.

• The Wendy Park Foundation, a non-profit that promotes and educates Clevelanders about Wendy Park at Whiskey Island, was awarded $2,500 for the WHISTLE Program – a three-week summer boat-building and sailing camp for Cleveland kids. The funds will be used to purchase materials. This innovative program exposes youth to Whiskey Island and the natural environment. Find out more about this group at www.wendyparkfoundation.org.

• Meet the Bloggers, a media organization that provides an alternative news source on issues that face Northeast Ohio, was awarded $500 for web hosting, newsletter maintenance, and pod-casting. Meet the Bloggers is known for hosting its interviews in Cleveland neighborhoods, bringing attention to under-reported issues, and for promoting an “open source” approach towards information and news. The Colectivo grant will help this grassroots group to expand its audience. Find out more about Meet the Bloggers at www.meetthebloggers.net.

• Parish Hall Cleveland, a music and arts non-profit housed in a former church hall in the Gordon Square Arts District of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, was awarded $1,500 towards a Gallery Renovations project. The funds will provide seed funding for the group to construct moveable walls, allowing them expand their programs. The moveable walls will create additional gallery space for art shows and other events. Find out more at www.parishhall.wordpress.com.

The Cleveland Colectivo was formed in January of 2005. Unlike traditional foundations, the group has created a giving circle model with no formal executive director, board of trustees or overhead – except for occasional purchases of pizza and drinks. Decisions are made by consensus at monthly meetings and membership is open. Voting members contribute at least $100 per quarter. For more information about the Cleveland Colectivo, visit www.clevelandcolectivo.org.

The Cleveland Colectivo mission statement is: “Clevelanders coming together to strengthen our community through collective investments that identify and nurture innovative projects.”

Change for Change

Cleveland Colectivo Friends,

It is our pleasure and honor to personally invite you to "Change for Change," the Cleveland Colectivo's very first fund-raising event. The Cleveland Colectivo is a "giving circle" that was founded in 2005 and is now in its second year of funding innovative community projects.

The focus of the event is an auction. Artists from around the region are creating and donating what we are calling "Social Change Banks," an idea that builds upon the simple "change bank" that many of us grew up with: saving our pennies, nickels and dimes for a year before donating them to an organization in the community. A social change bank links the act of an individual saving money to the mission of the Colectivo: Clevelanders coming together to strengthen our community through collective investments that identify and nurture innovative projects. Ultimately, each social change bank will be auctioned off and 100% of funds raised will go directly to the 2007 grantees of the Cleveland Colectivo.

We feel your presence at this event is very important because of your dedication to community issues. This event will be a fantastic opportunity to both meet new people and reacquaint yourself with familiar faces who believe in Cleveland and its surrounding communities. Won't you join us? Food and beverages will be provided. In addition to the auction funds, 10% from the sales of all regular gallery items will go to the Colectivo and its 2007 grantees!

The event will take place on Saturday, February 10th from 7-10 pm at the Local Girl Gallery at 16106 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood. For complete information on the Cleveland Colectivo, visit www.clevelandcolectivo.org. Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing you on February 10 th!

Sincerely,

The Cleveland Colectivo
